I just came across this article today and thought it was very timely to what I had posted.
The article is from HubSpot who is a great resource for learning about inbound marketing. The research they pulled together supports my earlier hypothesis.
<a href="http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/5795/Surprise-Internal-B2B-Email-Lists-Are-Far-More-Effective-Than-Third-Party-Lists.aspx?source=Blog_Email_[Surprise!+Internal+B]" rel="nofollow">Enjoy the Article!</a>

Ryan,

Yes, I would agree that you want to create a product/brand that people talk about. However, you do need to promote it somehow. Many entrepreneurs waste a lot of time perfecting their product and very little time promoting/marketing it. If you wait until you have the perfect product/brand than you will fail. There needs to be a balance between product/brand evolution and marketing. I would say that SEO, PPC and building an opt-in email list are some of the most valuable tools a small business owner has at their disposal.

I agree with your downsides to purchasing email lists. Creating a product/brand that people want to talk about is far more valueable than any email list, PPC, or SEO campaign.
